This car was incredible because it was real and I knew it was real and what a stunner! I remember sitting on the sofa with my dad waiting for the first episode of the eagerly awaited new series UFO and on it came and there in the titles was this incredible car and I was hooked, mesmerized and obsessed within a few seconds. I wanted it and not just the toy: I wanted the real thing and I was going to have it.

I was very lucky to have a friendship with Derek that lasted until the day he died. A sad loss to all of us he had inspired, and those who still work in the effects world. I talked a lot to him about Straker’s car and how he designed it. He told me that although it was a pig to drive, being built on top of a ford zodiac, he was really pleased with the way it looked and he was very fond of the design. This only fueled my burning passion to own it. But it had disappeared from the face of the earth.

I assembled a small group, and we concluded that the most viable option would be to create a plaster cast of the entire car, bring it to my workshop, make fiberglass sections, and reassemble them into a car. Only after that could we begin the necessary repairs since the vehicle had suffered damage, deterioration, collapse, and neglect, leaving it in a dire condition.

We promptly created the fiberglass sections and removed them from the molds, discarding the plaster molds and putting the pieces back together into the car. Finally, we had a replica of Straker’s vehicle in the workshop, and the real work was about to commence. For the next several months, we filled, sanded, straightened, and re-fiberglassed until we had a respectable product.

Being part of the film industry allows me to connect with a network of skilled professionals. I decided to reach out to Edd China, known from Wheeler Dealers, and was fortunate to find the perfect collaborator. Edd is brilliant, and this project is well-suited for him. He has a passion for the car, and we’ve developed a great friendship throughout this process.
